Overview of Experience
Marti has a background that ranges from scientific research to fashion design and from teaching to corporate management. She has often, in this varied career, found herself mentoring and guiding colleagues and employees and decided to make this her fulltime vocation in 2000. She has in excess of 2000 coaching hours at senior management level and more than 5000 hours of group facilitation and team coaching.
She coached on the Emerging Leaders Programme, a joint initiative of the Southern Africa – United States Centre for Leadership and Public Values at the University of Cape Town and Duke University and coached the ALDP (Accelerated Leadership Development Programme) at Sasol on behalf of GIBS. In addition to the one-on-one coaching she also does team coaching (or group facilitation) and leadership development for some of her clients. She designed a company-wide training programme for Standard Bank for all their managers on how to give and receive feedback. She also designed a Performance Coaching Programme for them in conjunction with their Leadership Development team and was asked to start their Leader-as-Coach Programme at the Global Leadership Centre.
She was involved in 2003 in a groundbreaking Action Reflection Learning (ARL) programme with one of the partners at the M.I.L Institute in Sweden. Twenty two final year students at CIDA City Campus were taken though a 3 month intensive ARL programme normally done with middle to senior managers in companies. She is a founder director of COMENSA (Coaching and Mentoring Southern Africa), and coordinating body for coaches and mentors that aims to be inclusive of all types of coaching and mentoring but also to provide ethics and standards for the industry as a whole. She is a member of WABC (Worldwide Association of Business Coaches) and was invited to be on their Expert Certification Panel. She was invited in 2007 to join the GCC (Global Convention on Coaching) workgroup on Research in the field of coaching.
Marti has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pretoria and an MBA from GIBS where she did her research project in coaching. She did research at the CSIR for 5 years before moving into the high fashion industry where she worked as a designer and owner of a training facility for designers. She did some contract teaching and consulting and spent 10 years in fashion retail that gave her experience in conducting business in Asia. She was an SA Breweries divisional director before deciding to change career to coaching and leadership development.
Her coaching and leadership career over the past 10 years has seen her do work with various local and international associates such as Henley Management College. She has coached across Africa and in the UK and is a contributing author to two books published in 2009: Business Coaching; Wisdom and Practice by Sunny Stout Rostron and Team Coaching; Artists at Work edited by Helena Dolny. |
